What is BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny)?
BaZi, or the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a traditional Chinese system for reading character. A chart is built from four pillars — the year, month, day and hour of birth — each made of a heavenly stem and an earthly branch: eight characters in all (hence “ba zi”).
The stem of the day pillar is your Day Master, which stands for your core self. The other characters are read in relation to it: the Ten Gods describe how you relate to people, work and money, and the Twelve Stages show how much energy your Day Master has in each pillar.
The five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — describe the balance of the chart. A strong or missing element is not good or bad in itself; it points to a tendency you can lean into or balance.
